Theatre Gemmayze, built 125 years ago in the heart of Beirut, is one of the oldest theatres in the Middle East. The massive explosion on the 4th of August 2020 that ripped through the Lebanese capital’s historic Gemmayze district shattered the theatre and the campus of the Sacre-Coeur School where it is located. The video above shows the damage of the blast and bears the testimony of the artists and teachers for whom this theatre was a second home.
Alphabetical Order undertook to rebuild this theatre. Works began in September and within two months our teams had finally completed renovations.
We were delighted by our collaboration with Collège Sacré-Coeur and thrilled to deliver this newly restored theatre that will contribute to the Arts but especially to the education of many young students at the Sacré-Coeur Gemmayze school.
We’re thankful for the many volunteers and friends that have contributed to our effort and grateful to the generous donors that back our education programmes and allow us to advance education in Lebanon. There is alas a lot more to do and we really appreciate your steady support to bring about change through education.
